How to glue a jigsaw puzzle after it’s finished: tips from gluing to framing
Puzzles are a wonderful way to relax, challenge your brain, and spend quality time with family and friends.
But what to do after a jigsaw puzzle is completed? Of course you can break it down and start the fun again, but you can also preserve it forever. This is especially suited for personalised puzzles, where it can become a unique frame or for giant puzzles with art designs.
Whether you want to frame it or simply display it as it is, in this blog we'll walk you through the step by step process to make sure your puzzle stays “in shape” for years to come.
How to glue a puzzle together?
Gluing a puzzle is the process of making sure that the puzzle pieces don’t move and it’s highly recommended if you want to display your jigsaw puzzle in any way.
What is needed
- A strong glue: it can be a special glue for puzzle pieces or any transparent glue
- A brush or applicator
- Adhesive tape
- Surface protector (optional)
- Wax paper
- A rolling pin
- A backing board (if you plan to frame it)
Step by step process
- Prepare your workspace: find a flat surface, then lay down a protective paper to prevent damaging your surface and add a piece of wax paper on it
- Secure the puzzle: lay the completed puzzle on the wax paper
- Prepare it: If your puzzle feels loose, use a rolling pin or another flat object to gently press the pieces together. This helps eliminate any gaps
- Apply the glue: Use the foam brush to apply a thin, even layer of glue across the top of the puzzle. Make sure all the cracks are filled in with glue
- Let it dry: depending on the glue used, it can take quite some hours. For a better result, we suggest you wait for the next day before you move it.
- Go for a second round if needed: make sure all spots are covered in glue, if not, go for a second layer in the missing spots.
Now your puzzle is ready to be displayed! Looking to have it framed? Then keep reading!
How to frame a puzzle together?
There are different ways to frame a puzzle together, with or without glue.
Framing a puzzle with glue
- Select a frame that complements the puzzle: make sure the size matches your puzzle (it can also be slightly larger)
- Once the glue is completely dry and the puzzle stable, place it on the backing board or directly into the frame
- Secure the back with adhesive tape or extra glue
- For a better finish, center the puzzle before placing it in the frame
- Place the glass or acrylic cover over the puzzle
- Clean the cover and frame it securely
- Hang it on the wall or place it on the shelf
How to frame a jigsaw puzzle without glue
- Select a frame: it has to match the size of your puzzle. Make sure it’s not too big, otherwise the puzzle might move if not secured properly.
- Place the puzzle on a sturdy surface and make sure it’s smooth
- Slide a thin backing under the puzzle (for example a cardboard or the frame’s board)
- Place the puzzle, still on the backing, directly into the frame.
- Place the transparent cover over the puzzle to protect if
- Attach the backing to the frame and secure it
